A Practice Built for Patients Who’ve Waited Too Long

Citrus Smiles Dental Studio

Over the years, we’ve seen what dental avoidance actually looks like, and we don’t judge it. Patients come to us after years, sometimes decades, away from the dentist. They’re embarrassed about what they’ll see in the mirror, worried about the cost, and often dreading the physical experience before they’ve even sat down. That’s exactly who we built this practice for.

Dr. Aurora earned a Master of Public Health with a focus in dental public health, not because it looked good on paper, but because he wanted to build a practice that shows up for people who have been underserved. Sedation dentistry is part of that mission. We accept most PPO plans. We have an in-house membership plan for patients without insurance. We offer Saturday hours at our Murphy location. And we offer sedation because getting the care you need should not feel like punishment. If you’re ready to come back to the dentist, we’re ready to make it work.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of medication or inhaled gas to help patients feel calm, relaxed, and comfortable during dental procedures. It ranges from light relaxation with nitrous oxide to deeper sedation through oral medication or IV administration. The goal is not to knock you out, but to bring your anxiety down to a level where treatment becomes genuinely manageable. It’s appropriate for patients of all ages and for everything from routine cleanings to complex oral surgery.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

  • Significant reduction in anxiety and fear
  • The ability to complete more treatment in fewer visits
  • Little to no memory of the procedure
  • Reduced gag reflex response
  • More comfortable experience for patients who struggle to sit still
  • Better access for the dental team, which often means more precise work

Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry

Dental sedation is not reserved for people with extreme fear. Many patients benefit from it in situations you might not expect. Our team at Citrus Smiles will review your medical history and discuss your anxiety level before recommending any sedation method. You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have dental anxiety or a strong fear of dental procedures
  • Had a traumatic dental experience in the past
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex that makes treatment difficult
  • Have difficulty getting and staying numb
  • Are facing a long or complex procedure, such as multiple dental extractions or implant surgery
  • Have a low pain threshold or find the sounds and sensations of dental work overwhelming
  • Need a lot of work done and want to minimize the number of appointments

Children who feel overwhelmed or restless during dental appointments can also benefit from certain sedation options. Dr. Aurora and Dr. Gupta evaluate each patient’s medical history and individual needs before recommending any sedation method.

Sedation Options at Citrus Smiles Dental Studio

We offer three levels of sedation to accommodate a wide range of anxiety levels and treatment types.

nitrous oxide at the dentist

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is the gentlest and most widely used form of dental sedation. A small nasal mask delivers a steady flow of nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen, producing a calm, relaxed feeling within minutes. You remain fully conscious and able to respond throughout your appointment. Because the effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed, most patients are comfortable driving themselves home. Nitrous oxide is safe for both children and adults and is an excellent option for mild to moderate anxiety.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed sedative medication before your appointment. By the time you arrive at our Murphy office, you will feel noticeably relaxed and drowsy, though you remain awake. This level of sedation is well-suited for patients with moderate dental anxiety or those undergoing longer procedures. Because the effects linger for several hours, you will need a trusted adult to drive you to and from your appointment.

IV Sedation

IV sedation delivers medication directly into the bloodstream for a deeper and faster-acting level of relaxation. It is typically reserved for patients with severe dental anxiety or those undergoing extensive treatment. Under IV sedation, many patients have little to no memory of the procedure. A responsible adult must be available to drive you home and stay with you while the effects fully subside.

Sedation Dentistry for Children

Younger patients sometimes struggle with the sensory experience of pediatric dental care, even when the procedure itself is simple. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective option for children who feel anxious or have difficulty sitting still during appointments. Our team has extensive experience administering nitrous oxide to young patients and always adjusts the approach based on the child’s age, size, and comfort level.

Families in Murphy, Wylie, and communities like Allen and McKinney regularly bring their children to Citrus Smiles for our ability to turn a stressful appointment into a calm, positive experience.

What to Expect When You Choose Dental Sedation

Consultation

Before any sedation is administered, Dr. Aurora or Dr. Gupta will review your complete medical history, current medications, and any health conditions that may affect your sedation plan. Safety is always the priority. We discuss your options in plain language and answer every question before moving forward.

Day of Your Appointment

On the day of your appointment, our team monitors you throughout the procedure. Depending on the type of sedation, you may receive pre-procedure instructions, such as fasting beforehand or arranging a ride home. With nitrous oxide, you will be alert enough to communicate with us at any point. With oral or IV sedation, we track your vital signs and keep you comfortable from start to finish.

After your appointment, we provide clear post-sedation instructions and make sure you feel stable before you leave our care.
